Richmond, IN
The city of Richmond has great history behind it that started in 1806. Quakers moving eastward settled at the Whitewater River. It was a great place to settle because the river goes in three directions, making travel and transportation easier. When the town was incorporated in 1818, the population was very small.
Richmond has always had a taste for the fine arts. Charles Francis Jenkins, a resident of Richmond, is one of the founding fathers of film projection. He sold his patent to Thomas Edison. The city has also been a long-time supporter of orchestral music and the opera.
Through its history, Richmond has been reliant on manufacturing. The money from industry helped further support the arts, with museums, theaters, and the famous Gennett studio being built.
Today, Richmond is the county seat of Wayne County in Eastern Indiana, right on the border with Ohio. The city is located on U.S. 40, formerly known as the National Road. U.S. 40 goes right through the heart of Richmond.
