Chevrolet has a rich history that dates back over a century. The company gets its name from co-founder Louis Chevrolet, who was already a renowned racer. He formed the company with General Motors founder William C. Durant in November 1911.
The first Chevrolet made its debut in 1913 and was called the Classic Six. It was large, powerful, and stylized, which made it more expensive than some of the competition. Chevrolet also produced a more-affordable Little and sales of both were solid. Durant recognized the value that lay in the entry-level domain and steered Chevrolet in that direction. This led to the Model L and Model H, affordable, reliable, and successful models.
In the next few decades, Chevrolet continued to produce value-oriented models like the iconic Suburban. The early Suburbans from the 1930s were the grandfathers of the modern SUV. Even in 1936, the Suburban was a workhorse that could carry up to eight passengers and their luggage through rough terrain. Today, the Suburban carries the badge of being the longest-lived, continuous-production nameplate in the United States.
Throughout its history, Chevrolet has always been dedicated to bringing technology to its value-oriented lineup. Even in the early years, Chevrolet offered many features that were reserved for luxury cars into its lineup of affordable cars and trucks. Features such as safety glass, fuel injection, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control were used in the Chevrolet lineup before many other automotive brands.
Another characteristic of the Chevrolet brand has always been design. Think back to some of the iconic Chevrolet models and how their designs make them stand out—the Corvette, Bel Air, Impala, Camaro, and even the pickup trucks.
Today, Chevrolet continues to innovate with models like the electrically driven Volt, compact Spark, and performance-oriented Corvette and Camaro.
